But like I told you before, I think that music is more than sound, and the feelings that it brings are boundaryless between styles. I like many sorts of music, but what makes me different from other producers is that I dare to try various directions. Soul and reggae are the same to me, just the rhythm is different. Music from Mali and the blues are the same to me. Free jazz and dub do not sound the same but go the same direction. I live my life with wide opened ears!

There are a lot of cover versions in your music and you had a 'covers special' on La Spirale. What is it about cover versions that you like?

I like when a cover shows that a song is well composed. Very often when the composition is good, you can play it in many different styles. Just look at our next release on Q-tape: two 7 inches with four different versions of 'Brothers on the Slide' by Cymande. It's a good song, and you can do what you like with it.

Covering a song is a good way to give tribute to the ones I really love as composers that people who are into black music don't know. Like Neil Young and Bob Dylan. I think it is cool to show the hardcore reggae fans that Bob Dylan is cool and that his songs are great. I like to see a big dancefloor dancing to 'Summertime', which was composed in our granny's time!

We came to the Ginger Xpress gig at Cargo in London - you looked like you were having a lot of fun on stage. I take it you really enjoy performing live?

Last year I went back on stage after five years and it is a real pleasure to play live. I have to say that playing with talented musicians really helps. Last Summer The Dynamics played at the Pantiero festival, a top range festival. It was really nice. We had a gig with Patchworks Ginger Xpress in a very small club in Lyon in May and it was mad.

Your live show is so much rawer than your records. It looked like you were adjusting the levels all the way through the first track! Is that normal for you guys or did you just miss the soundcheck that day?

We had a problem with the sound that day because the place was really full and warm, so the instruments were not tuned because of the heat. Plus the sound changes a lot between an empty and a full room. Anyway, we have a Quantic Soul Orchestra attitude. Live music is not supposed to be clean. Our music on stage can be said to be rough and risky. Punky soul jazz!

That aspect definitely came across. And the set-up was quite unique with live instruments over beats from a laptop. Do you ever work with a live drummer?

No but I'm about to get back to playing drums myself, which I haven't done for 5 years.

You were on bass at the Cargo show. How many instruments do you play?

Well on stage with the Patchworks Ginger Xpress I only play the bass. In the studio I play keyboards, percussions, guitar and bass. I'm a bit shite at most of them but who cares - with computers you can fix mistakes. But the musicians you've seen on stage with me are much better. They are great musicians and real friends of mine.

Your online radio show La Spirale is very cool. How did that come about?

La Spirale is something we do with Mr Day and it is just a pleasure to meet every week in the studio to play and listen to music together. We've only been doing it for six months now, but it really helps us to know each other musically. And if we can share that with some people all around the world, then it is cool, just like you do!

Music shouldn't be only for the educated people. TV spreads shit in our ears. With radio like yours or ours, I don't mean that the people educate themselves, but they have an opportunity to expand their mind in some way. When I find an old crusty piece of wax and think it is great then I need to share it.

So what's next for Patchworks after nearly ten years in the music business?

I'm happy with the music, but I care about the money. I'd like to do exactly the same but be able to afford a holiday. To be honest I don't give a shit about success, but if it brings the money, then, why not! If I stop getting burned by dodgy crappy record companies, then maybe success will lead to money. Who knows?

I think I'll keep on taking things as they come - it's the only way to keep doing the things you do longer than three years. I love the Happy Mondays but who are they today?

Well Bruno, thanks for your time and your music.

It was a pleasure.
